Mindfulness for Musicians
9:30AM: Coffee and Refreshments
10:00AM: Workshop Begins
What is "mindfulness" and what does it have to do with music? As musicians, how can sitting still and quieting our minds bring more peace in the face of fear, performance anxiety, competition, and negative self-perception? As teachers, how can a regular meditation practice enhance efficacy and increase student success? Join Philip Anderson, piano teacher and certified meditation instructor, for a look at how mindfulness practices can help musicians and music teachers develop presence, equanimity, resilience, and adaptability – on stage, in the practice room, in lessons, and out in the wild.
In this hour-long workshop, Philip will lead a discussion and give introductory instructions on how to practice this specific meditation technique, which has been around for thousands of years and yet is still profoundly relevant for our modern age. While its roots are in Buddhism, this particular practice is secular and available to everyone. No experience required and all are welcome! This event is free to attend and will offer a Zoom option for those who cannot attend in person.
Philip Anderson earned his BM in Jazz Studies, his MM in Piano Performance, is the lead on-camera instructor for Quincy Jones' piano learning app, Playground Sessions, and is a member of the Steinway Teacher & Educational Partner (STEP) program. He received his 100-hr Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification from Tibet House US and Dharma Moon, where he continues to study with senior Buddhist teacher and Emmy award winning musician, David Nichtern.
